burger-apple-pizza1. What’s that smell…???

What’s the worst thing about student housing?

For a lot of people, the answer is the smell.

Mostly, that’s the smell of bloated bin bags and old food.

But your food caddy is there to help.

Keeping food waste separate from the rest of your rubbish and emptying your caddy regularly will help combat the reek of bursting bin bags.

Plus, food waste gets recycled into compost by your Council. So, if you walk through a park on your way to class, chances are your food waste will have helped the grass and flowers to grow!

2. Make room for the next party

You finally have somewhere you can have your mates round.

But, let’s face it, it ain’t that roomy, and when those empty bottles pile up they get in the way pretty quickly.

Dumping glass bottles into your general waste only makes the black bin bags pile up.

So collect your bottles and get down to your local recycling centre.

It’s closer than you think. And you could probably do with some air…

3. Get out together

In fact, you could all probably do with some air…

Make your trip to the local recycling centre a group activity with your housemates.

If someone has a car, pile in.

If not, a few people is enough to make the load a lot easier to carry.

(Wheelie suitcases are also very handy…)

Bring any broken electrical items or old batteries with you on your glass-bottle runs.

And getting out of the house together is a great excuse grab a coffee and a catch up.

4. Destress, stay well

Parties aren’t the only way to take a break, of course. Taking time out of your books to be physical and productive in other ways can really help your mental wellbeing while you’re studying. Sorting out the recyclables might sound basic, but it’s a great way to slow down and relax while staying productive, to take you out of your own head and out of your laptop, and make your student home a nicer place to live.

earth5. While you’re young: it’s your world!

You’ve heard it before: as a student, you’re the next generation.

Most young people are more aware of environmental problems than previous generations.

As more and more is discovered about the impact of our waste on the environment, and more and more developments are made in waste management, recycling is going to be increasingly present in day-to-day life.

So this is your opportunity…

The quicker you get used to recycling systems the better.

And by getting together with your friends and getting involved, you have a chance of making a real difference to your world.
